Caring for Vintage Pieces

Care starts with the individual piece. Its material, trims, lining and existing condition all matter. Follow a legible care label and use specialist advice when the label is missing or the construction is delicate.

Before cleaning

Check for loose seams, fragile fabric, unstable colour and damaged fastenings. Empty pockets and remove detachable accessories if appropriate. Do not assume that every vintage item can be machine washed or tumble dried.

Between wears

Let pieces air in a dry, ventilated place away from direct heat. Store them clean and dry. Fold knitwear when hanging could stretch it, and give bags gentle support so they are not crushed.

Material matters

Leather, suede, embellished fabrics and structured or lined garments may need specialist care. Avoid experimenting with household stain removers, oils or heat on an irreplaceable piece. If the fibre content or previous treatment is unknown, ask a qualified cleaner first.

Small repairs, longer wear

Address loose buttons and opening seams before they get worse. A tailor or repair specialist can advise on options that respect the material and original construction.
